Does the filter membrane have a front and back side? Is the glossy side facing up or down?

Do filter membranes have a front and back side? We need to talk about it from two aspects. One is pure membranes and the other is composite membranes. Generally speaking, pure membranes usually have no obvious front or back side. The membranes are designed to be used on both sides, and the effect of use is the same, which means that they can be installed in either direction without affecting their performance.

Only in the case of special use requirements, pure membranes (such as membranes used for filtration applications such as reverse osmosis) may have a glossy surface or no glossy surface. The presence of a glossy surface on this type of pure membrane usually depends on the material composition and manufacturing process, and its composition is exactly the same. The only difference is the difference in the uniformity of the appearance. In addition, the texture or appearance of some pure membranes on both sides may be slightly different, such as electrostatic air filter membranes, especially electrostatic filters, which may be made into a glossy form to achieve high filtration efficiency.

There are usually many processes for making a glossy surface of a pure film, such as polishing, which uses mechanical or chemical processes to smooth the surface and polish the surface of the film to a high gloss to obtain a glossy surface; physical vapor deposition (PVD), which uses PVD technology to deposit a thin layer of material on the surface of the film to form a glossy and reflective coating; surface etching, etching or treating the surface of the film to enhance its smoothness and reflectivity, thereby producing a glossy appearance; and surface functionalization of the film, which modifies the surface chemical properties of the film to improve its optical properties and form a glossy side.

Let's talk about composite films. Most composite films have a front and back side, because composite films are composed of multiple layers with different functions. According to the specific layer composition and treatment, they have a specified glossy side, which is what we call the front and back sides. For example, the active layer of the composite film is responsible for the main separation process. If a special material is applied to improve performance, it may have a glossy side; in addition, other layers in the composite film, such as the support layer or backing material, may or may not have a glossy surface, depending on its composition and use.

The smooth surface layer of the composite membrane, such as the filter membrane layer with antibacterial treatment, may have a smooth surface with applied treatment. Its smooth surface is usually placed towards the airflow to maximize the antibacterial effect; there are also composite membranes with specific coatings or treatments on one side for specific purposes (such as antibacterial treatment or electrostatic charge). Generally, manufacturers will recommend specific directions for optimal filtration performance; there are also composite membranes with active layers as coated smooth layers, which are responsible for the main separation process; of course, there are also support layers or backing materials, which are made into smooth layers, which mainly depend on their composition and use.

The method of making the glossy layer of the composite film mainly includes several aspects, such as surface polymer coating, applying a thin layer of polymer coating on one side of the film to form a glossy surface. In actual use, this coating is selected according to its optical properties (such as reflectivity and smoothness); metal coating, using metal coating (such as a thin metal layer such as aluminum) to form a reflective and glossy surface on the film; surface treatment polishing, polishing the film surface to a high gloss to obtain a glossy surface; lamination, laminating the film with a material with a glossy surface (such as a reflective film or foil) to form a glossy surface; vacuum deposition physical vapor deposition (PVD), using PVD technology to deposit a thin layer of material onto the film surface to form a glossy and reflective coating. Common materials used for this purpose include metals such as aluminum or silver; surface modification etching, etching or treating the film surface to enhance its smoothness and reflectivity, thereby producing a glossy appearance; and surface functionalization, nano-coating technology, etc.

Regardless of whether it is a pure membrane or a composite membrane, their smooth surface should face upwards, because most of the smooth surfaces are the main filtering surfaces, and placing them upwards can ensure the filtering effect. If the filter membrane is installed upside down, that is, the smooth surface faces downward, then the filter membrane cannot filter normally or cannot achieve the filtering effect, because the smooth surface is produced by the process, and the process settings are the actual needs of the application.
